To help protect your computer against virus, trojan, malware, hackers and spyware attacks you need five layers of protection. Below is an explanation of the main online threats and recommended software to protect your computer.

1. Virus attack: A virus is a program that can infect your computer and cause loss of data and valuable time. Some viruses are harmless pranks but all viruses are not wanted. They are called viruses because they attempt to spread to other computers using your email program or other tricks.
   Virus Protection: The best way to protect your computer against virus attack is to install an Anti Virus Program. Frontier PC Tutoring recommends AVG or Avast which are free anti virus programs that will give you good protection.
2. Hackers: Your computer is attacked by hackers when they gain access to your computer via your Internet connection. If a hacking progran gains control of your computer it could be used to do all sorts of bad or illigal things including, stealing your personal information, access codes, credit card details or use your computer to send millions of spam emails around the world at your cost.
   Hacker Protection: Install a firewall that will block hackers and other computers from your files and sensitive information. Frontier PC Tutoring recommends Zone Alarm from Zonelabs. There is a free version and a pro version with more features but the free version will be enough for the average Internet user. 3.  Trojan Programs: These are programs that secretly instal on your computer when you download free programs like screensavers and music or movies from P2P sites.
   Trojan Protection is possible with AVG Antispyware which has a free version that will protect you from many of the trojan programs out there.
4. Spyware and Malware: These are programs that hide on your computer and report back to a host with your private information and sensitive data. They often change the configuration of your computer and alter the pages and search results you see. This brings revenue to the host and is know as Hijacking.
   Spyware and Malware Protection is achieved with a combination of the programs mentioned here and we recommend you download Spybot Search and Destroy to detect and prevent these programs from running.
5. Adware: Adware is like spyware as it hides on your computer and sends your sensitive information back to a host usually to program certain ads to appear on websites you visit and is the cause of a lot of the spam you get in your email box.
   Protection from adware can be achieved with Lavasofts Adaware Personal SE. This program has a free version and a pro version. Buy the pro version if you can afford it but the free version will give you good protection.
